Multiplying Connections and Sophia Hwang have received a 2010 Stoneleigh Junior Fellowship. Ms Hwang received her undergraduate degree in human biology from Stanford University and masters degree in education from the University of Pennsylvania. Ms. Hwang, who joins the Multiplying Connections Initiative in August, will focus on building capacity for effective trauma informed training of Philadelphia's Childrens' Services Providers by mapping the Multiplying Connections Core Competencies to existing curricula offered to professionals and identifying opportunities and gaps in current training activities. In conjunction with her masters program Ms. Hwang taught high school science in South Philadelphia through the Teach for America program. Her experience inspired her to seek the Stoneleigh Junior Fellowship with Multiplying Connections: "I want to join the efforts at Multiplying Connections because through teaching. I became acutely aware of the high prevalence of trauma in our students. I became an informal conflict mediator, relationship counselor, and therapist to attend to my students' stress, trauma, and neglect. By working at Multiplying Connections, I will have the ability to effect change on a larger scale by articulating best practices in trauma-informed curricula. Sharing this information with teachers, health professionals, and child advocates will have a sustainable and significant impact on our children." This fellowship is made possible through a grant from the Stoneleigh Foundation which provides fellowships for social change.
