Salvation Army creates new position to expand trauma-informed training

In the three years since the trauma-informed model, Sanctuary®, has been implemented at the Red Shield Family Residence homeless shelter of the Salvation Army in North Philadelphia, a non-violent cohesive community culture has been building, better enabling healing and empowerment of families and staff.  As this community has become its own resource and has been able to better understand and address past histories of chronic stress, violence, and trauma, the positive changes have not gone unnoticed by higher-level management of the Salvation Army.  As a result, Sandy Sheller- an art and family therapist who implemented Sanctuary® at the shelter- now has a new position as Coordinator of Divisional Social Services Mental Health Training. In this role, she will be training and supervising Salvation Army staff and officers throughout the Greater Philadelphia and surrounding areas in trauma and mental health issues-  enlarging healing communities that are restorative and empowering.  To learn more about the Salvation Army go to www.salvationarmy.org.  To learn more about Sanctuary® go to http://www.sanctuaryweb.com/
